Uterine Artery Embolization

Embolizing (blocking with small particles) the arteries leading to fibroids in the uterus will cause the uterus and fibroids to shrink to about one-half of the pre-treatment size. The particles are passed through a catheter placed into an artery in the groin area and positioned in the area of the uterus. Symptoms of heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure will be helped in 85% of patients. This procedure is done by interventional radiologists working as a team with our office. Hospital stay is overnight. Usual recovery is within one week. Full shrinkage of the fibroids may take up to 6 months.
